V2 Case Almost Finished!

Hello! It’s Alabaster with a long-overdue update.

I’m so close to done. There’s not much left for me to do. It’s taken me so long for so many reasons, and I’d like to talk about that a little before I mention my progress.

At BronyCon, I mentioned to those who asked that the case would be done mid to late August, and that never happened. I wanted to figure out a way to make the case nicer than the last one, and was having a hard time finding a way to do that. I’m not an expert designer, everything I know is self-taught for the most part. I tend to find myself in a position where I’m just not skilled enough to design the things I think of, and I try and work around that. On top of that, there’s the fact that 3D Printing isn’t always exact. I could design two parts that fit together perfectly, and have them not fit when printed. It’s a constant cycle of printing things, and making adjustments to things by a tenth of a millimeter.

The problem I had with the V2 case was the way the lid would attach to the case. Andon and I threw a ton of ideas at each other, but I was having a hard time replicating them in a way that my printer could keep up with. In the end, I’m fairly happy with what I was able to do, and I’d like to hope that everyone else will be too.

Here is what the case looks like in it’s entirety, right now. Mind you, I haven’t smoothed out all the edges, and I haven’t finalized anything yet.

I have a few photos of the printed and assembled case. Taking these pictures, I noticed a bunch of little errors that I may have missed otherwise. I’ve made note to change about 15 things, and I’ll go do those as soon as this gets posted.

In the end, you can see I was able to successfully make the lid better. I made a real, working hinge! Inside the hinge is a 1mm diameter metal rod keeping it all together. It’s pretty simple to look at, but I had to reprint it several times before it all fit correctly more than 60% of the time. The only thing I have left to do for the case is make a latch on the front. I have a few ideas on how I want to do that, and that shouldn’t take me too long to figure out. More than likely I’ll end up using the same idea as the v1, except just a tiny bit in the front or the two front corners. We’ll see what works best while not looking like garbage! I really wanted to bring in some external parts for the latch, as well as the hinge, but that’s not going to happen, sadly.

As always, feel free to reach out to me on Discord, or at my email alabaster@matchfire.net

Alabaster on the V2 Case

Hey guys, been a good while since I posted, and there’s a kinda good reason (not so much) for that. I’ve been having rampant computer problems that have almost barred me entirely from using my Desktop computer (the one I do all my work on). Turns out, the memory leak I was trying to hunt down and kill was in more than just the three programs I had removed from my desktop about a month ago, but in Windows itself.

Long story short, the problem is fixed now. And I need to catch up. Badly… I’ve been putting of saying anything until I had the problem sorted out, and now that that time is now, here we go!

SO! I will be scrapping the half-finished design I had been working on in order to favor a new one. That being said, now that I’m not scraping along at 98% memory usage all day, I have the ability to both work faster, and show my work to you guys. As some of you may have already seen, I made a post on Twitter asking for votes on the type of media you would like to see (either a livestream, or a timelapse). HERE is a link to the tweet, so you may go vote. Now, keep in mind, if I do a livestream, I will also be posting that on the YouTube, if a bit later than I would post the timelapse.

Anyhow, yeah. Like Andon said at the end of his last post, I will be working to make it so that the V2 case is compatable with the V2+, V2.5, V3, whatever we call it. That way, you guys don’t have to wait months again for me to get my act together. I promised people at BronyCon that I would have the case design done by mid to late July, and I failed to deliver. And for that I am sorry.

My new “release date” is early to early-mid August.

As usual, if you have any questions, I can be reached on Twitter @MysterAla or through my email alabaster@matchfire.net

Current Events! & Maybe New Store Stuff One Day?

So, the last post (The one right below this one) ended with some talk of him coming to some events with me. This weekend, Andon shall stay with me on campus, and take a tour of New Jersey and New York.

We’re planning on doing just two one things, but I’ll be looking for things for us to do Monday afternoon after our second event ends.

SO! Event #1 is on Sunday the 10th. For the past few years, probably three or four, I’ve been attending an event in New York at the Jacob Javits center called “Inside 3D Printing Expo and Conference”. Needless to say, I love it. It’s free to attend, and has a show floor containing the latest and greatest from the worlds #1 3D Printing companies. They also have workshops and keynote sessions if you really want to see some of the good stuff. The Expo goes on for three days, Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday.

Event #2 has a bit of a story behind it. Last… Oh man, it’s gotta be last October or November, I spent a day in Harlem, NY, assisting one of my professors lead a workshop on 3D Printing in art at the Leeroy Neiman Arts Center. A bunch of really awesome artists came, and learned how to involve 3D Design and Printing in their works. I had a total blast, and apparently I made a good impression with the organizers of that event, because a month or two later, I get an email from someone who heard my name, and they wanted to know if I was willing to return to my home county and lead a hands-on workshop for educators in the area. To be honest, I was speechless when I got the email, and I kinda freaked out a bit. A lot. I freaked out a lot. Spent the next hour in a panic over just how badly I could mess the opportunity up. BUT! I’m going! It’s going to be amazing! I’m going to show my previous teachers a thing or two about 3D Printers.  The event is on Monday, the 11th, in the morning.

^Just got the email that this thing is going to be moved to November. Me and Andon will be attending the Expo Sunday and Monday.

Beyond that, Andon mentioned that there was some stuff going on that he wanted more details on before talking about them. I’m not sure how many things he has going on behind the curtains I can’t see through, but there are some things I can show off!

Possible Sticker design we might sell in the store, or other stuff. I got 20, just to put them on stuff because I can.

Three separate designs, one for me, one for Jason, and one for the company. Unless I decide to write funny names and job titles on those.

Got one for me, and one for Jason. They're super soft, and I love mine!

Some updates for ya!

Hey guys! So, I’ve been working on a few things.

First, is trying to mail out the rewards I have to Jason. I have everything I need except a place to drop off the package. I’ll be returning home for the weekend next week, so that’s the latest it’ll get sent out. Hopefully people will respond to my emails and tell me what I need to know, so I can get it done sooner!

The second thing, involves all of you. Well… Five of you.

I’ve been looking around for a chat method we could use, and I think I found it! Discord has a really cool program that we’re going to try out, and we want a few of you guys / gals to come make sure I’ve set it all up properly! The best thing about it is that you don’t need to download anything if you don’t want to! All you need is a Discord account and a server to join! This is a link to our server. It’s good for five uses, so the first five people who click on it, get in!

Don’t worry! If you don’t get in now, we’ll probably be opening it up to everyone in the next two or three weeks. We’re doing things this way, because while Discord has some really nifty features that we want to be able to use, it’s not built for what we’re using it for. If things don’t work too well, chances are we’ll be switching to HipChat or something similar!

If there are any questions or concerns, please shoot me an email at alabaster@matchfire.net!

Some new items in the store!

Hey guys, Daniel here!

I guess I’m officially a part of the team here at Matchfire. It’s super awesome that I have this opportunity, and I’m looking forward to the projects we’re planning.

Some of them are really cool!

Anyway, this is an update about the store, specifically the new item I had Jason put up a few hours ago. I’d been meaning to make my own carabiner design for a while now, and I finally did it! The basic one you guys can get has “MATCHFIRE” embossed into the side, in any color of plastic I stock. Furthermore, if you want your own wording on it, I can do that too! It’s currently $3.00 for the Matchfire carabiner, and $8.00 for a custom design, with any additional carabiners using that design being $3.00 each. If you have a question about keychain customization, shoot me an email to the address below, I’ll try and get back to you within a few hours!

I’m planning to make more stuff like this, and if you guys have any suggestions on what I can change, what I should make, want to yell at me, or just want to chat, I can now be reached at alabaster@matchfire.net!
